Soldiers Flood Lagos Streets As Jonathan Orders The Army To Forestall #OccupyNigeria Protests

Story by saharareporters
Last Updated: Sunday, January 15, 2012

President Goodluck Jonathan has deployed hundreds of gun-wielding soldiers on the streets of Lagos in a desperate bid to forestall peaceful protests scheduled to continue today.

Through reports filed by citizen reporters affiliated with Saharareporters it was gathered that the armed soldiers have taken positions in such spots as Ikeja, Ikoyi, Surulere and Ojota as well as other spots where thousand of Nigerians have poured out in protest the government sharp increase in price of petrol. About 16 check points and barricades have been been mounted around the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota according to reports.

The deployment of soldiers comes on the heels of Mr. Jonathan's planned broadcast Monday morning in which he will announce the reduction of fuel prices to N97 a liter.

In the address, the text of which has already been published in full by Saharareporters, President Jonathan takes an unusually harsh tone towards the protesters.

In an interview moments ago, one of the leaders of the protest movement said that the protests have been held in peaceful atmosphere, but added that President Jonathan appears ready to use force against peace-loving Nigerians. They vowed to make an appearance at the venue today regardless of the presence of the soldiers. Seun Kuti, the son of Afrobeat maestro Fela Anikulapo-Kuti sent an sms to Saharareporters that he will be at the rally today.

A protest leader told SaharaReporters, "We want to make clear that President Jonathan would be held responsible for any casualty that results from his decision to unleash soldiers on unarmed and peaceful protesters who are merely demanding accountability and transparency from their leaders". He further noted that officers of the Nigerian police have so far killed about 20 protesters in different parts of the country, he vowed that Nigerians would never let the victims of police brutality die in vain"

Another protest leader expressed dismay and disappointment with the decision of trade union leaders to unilaterally call off street protests on account some purported security concerns.

He added that some of the in the movement had received speculations all week that the government was offering a variety of financial and other material inducement to labour leaders in order to compromise them.

He stated that, "it would be extremely hard for any compromised labour leader to hoodwink Nigerians who are now determined to seize the opportunity to question the greed as well as ineptitude other so-called leaders"

President why didn't you use the army on the boko harem that have been killing innocent people this shows that there deaths means nothing to you, rather you are going after innocent protesters that are seeking for their voices to be heard. Remember the same people you unleshed the soldiers on are thesame citizens that voted you in, don't forget that your four year term will soon be over. That means you will seek their support again be wise. Here the cry of the people and put back the price as it was before you came into the office.

Protesters are blocking them from stealing money whereas bokoharem are of no stumbling block to them. He will do all he can to protect his/their interest. Nigerians must wake up to this injustice and put an end to this thieves.

What an irony ? President orders the Army on the innocent Nigerians who are exercising their right to express their dissent by way of protest, on the removal of fuel subsidy. He kept the same Army indoor while Boko haram were and are still killing Nigerians. President Jonathan, has just suddenly realized that he can order Nigiria Army to function or perform. I guess the innocent protesters are more of a security threat than the boko haram. Someone needs to remind the President that the joy of democracy is the right accorded common man to fully express himself without any hinderance and intimidation.

Consider the Masses
1/16/2012 6:25:06 AM
Mr president, you shouldn't be intimidating nigerians just b'cos they are trying to express what on their minds by protesting (is is freedom of speech). this same set of people that you sent soldiers to are the people that voted for you during the election. It is not as if they don't want to agree but your predecesors also did the same thing and made promises but nothing good came out of it.
What about the money realised from this same subsidy of a nowhere to be found cos it has been shared amidst them. why not consider the the masses they can't continue suffering and similing.
Remember that this same people who voted you in can still vote you out...............

U want army to kill civilians
1/16/2012 7:31:22 AM
As we know Nigeria army are one way traffic, they can end up killing more civilians . We have not the verdict on the case of Ademola killed by police during the strike. Now that the strike has been called off , Jonathan call off your army from Lagos and stop intimidating innocent people going about their business . Enough is enough sha.

Remember What Jonathan said in Feb 2011 . ACCORDING TO NEWS PAPERS:-

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola on Wednesday replied President Goodluck Jonathan who called South-west political leaders as rascals, saying his comments were completely “unpresidential.” Speaking with newsmen in Lagos Airport Wednesday afternoon, the Governor expressed shock that such derogatory comment came from the nation's number one citizen, stressing that it clearly showed the People's Democratic Party (PDP) did not have a reform agenda but mudslinging.

“The office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a very high office and I don't think that that kind of language coming from the PDP presidential candidate is presidential. But Lagosians will have to make a determination but we are beginning to see clearly the pattern of the candidacy of the PDP candidates who seek to continue to lead this country into poverty, into inefficiency, into insecurity.

And it is interesting that these remarks are being made from outside Lagos , so I hope that when they come here they would be able to call us rascals again. And if we are rascals, it means that some of the other governors they have been presiding over is a republic of rascals. But I leave him to decide his own choice of words. Why should they be worried about our success in Lagos?

If it gives them sleepless night and it makes them uncomfortable, I make no apologies that is why I am in government. But having said that, I think that I have asked myself whether the President is more concerned about who is Governor of Lagos or about becoming President. I think that if the PDP wants to swap candidates for the Governor of Lagos, I will be ready to face him because his candidate is not talking about what he wants to do in Lagos . And I will leave our own presidential candidate on issues that are germane to Nigerians”, he stated.
Fashola, who also took time to assess the PDP-led government of Nigeria for 12 years, pointing out that Lagos appears to have felt the federal presence the least.

He queried: “Why are the federal roads in Lagos have not been fixed? Why do Lagosians not have electricity? Why should Lagosians bear the cost of their own security in spite of the enormous votes for that every year in the federal budget? These are the issues that concern Lagosians and those are the issues about which their votes will be deployed. The Lagos voters will not vote on the basis of luck. I didn't win this office on the basis of luck, it was won on the basis of very clear manifesto of the ACN, very clear ideas about how to fix this economy, very hard work that we have done since 1999 as a people, progressives who have shown our common touch with the people.

Elections will not be won by resulting to derogatory language and by claiming luck. Elections require those who seek elective offices to focus on the people over who they plan to exercise authority and to communicate to them in a very clear and practical manner how they intend to improve their lot. I think that the PDP led federal government has a lot of questions to answer in Lagos .”
