Going by the reports reaching Nigeriafilms.com from a source in Cameroon, some Cameroonian artistes have concluded plan to stage a protest at a concert P-Square would be performing at later this month.

According to an e-mail sent to us, members of Syndicat Camerounais De Musicien (SYCAMU), a body of the country's artistes, are protesting against the huge amount of performance fees paid foreign artistes who perform in Cameroon while they (local artistes) get peanuts as performance fees.

Their grievances is mainly against MTN, which organises most of the big concerts in Cameroon.

According to the e-mail, the artistes' body, through its president, Romeo Dika want a change in the way its members are treated by show organisers.

They claim that MTN pays about 200 or 300 million CFA to foreign artistes while about 30 to 50 million CFA is paid to local Cameroonian artistes.

They have now concluded plans and strategies to stage a protest on May 18th when P-Square would be performing at a concert in the country.

The next thing we shall hear is Cameroon people claiming that P-Square of Peter and Paul Okoye are from their country. Didn't they claim that Obafemi Martins was from Cameroon until the poor boy came to clear the air he was born and breed in Lagos by Yoruba parents? These useless Africans can't stop being envious of Nigerians.

Psquare is INTERNATIONAL and far better than some local artists here. Lets note that PETIT PAYS who is Cameroonian will be present at the concert too and is paid THE SAME AMOUNT like that of the PSQUARE

I work in MTN and im in the organisation team there

hahaha Cameroon oyeh!!!! Africa in Miniature. We are not typically English speaking. Most of our artists are Francophones and are well done in French Speaking countries so if u don"t know them, don't mean others don't. We been through the music thing and done that. We not claiming any non-Cameroonians. never seen a Cameroonian thatz not proud to be one. Even u listen to Coupe decales and all that, u will hear most of the artiste hyping Cameroonian cities, ministers and soccer players. besides there are a lot more nigerians in Cameroon than u can ever imagine. U guys should stop being myopic and fighting senselessly. The fact is that u will never be treated in ur country as well as u have been in a foreign one. Even jesus was literally booed in his hometown compared to the praise he got in other places. Psquare themselves confessed in an interveiw with primetime africa to being treated by far better in other african countries than in naija. The fact is that if those cama artists were really in d same league and deserved as much they wouldn't be complaining cause they would be on tour getting as much getting as much in other countries .

We Cameroonians are open minded and do consume artistic productions from all over Africa provided they are good.however, Nigerians are shallow minded and only consume that which is Nigerian.I personally luv Africa and hate to read self centered gimmicks from our Nigerian brothers.Abi you guys don`t know that its this kind of ethnocentrism and discrimination that is bring Nigeria to its demise?long live Africa!
Psquare
eposi | 5/16/2012 9:24:52 PM |
since Psquare is so international, why didnt they hire them to compose the world cup song when it was played in Africa since they are the giants of Africa? why didnt they use one of their songs too like they used Zankalewa's? didn't Shakira say she grew up listening to Zankalewa? So ya'll nigerians should not think if you dont listen to other african musics, other people don't.

What do you mean by foreign artists? We are here in the foreign land and no body knows about these foreign artist of yours but us africans. When they open their mouth and sing Americans complain they can even understand what they are saying. They don't have any major hit here in the USA apart from the fact that akon feature in one of their songs as well as snoop D. African music is good for us africans and let us leave it at that. How could you possibly understand cameroon music when it is sang in french? Checkout this cameroon musician longue longue title of song ( ayo africa ) and feel how music can transient in to human soul to short up.So be quite and let Cameroonian be. For the record Cameroon is the most peaceful country in the world.nothing against these artist I love some of their songs and also know they are growing.

SP | 5/16/2012 2:38:48 AM |
Ok, look here O.P. this a list of cameroonian musician who are known internationally. Longue Longue, Petit Paye, Grace Decca, Sergio Polo, Njoreu, Sammy Dico,Anni Anzue, Lady Ponce, ben Decca,Bilca Tobi, to name but few.

Look you know the problem with us nigerians is that we do not understand french and we are not even striving to go learn if from our friends and brothers neighbours;cameroon. most of these musician mentioned sing in french. So they mostly go perfom in french speaking countries like France, Canada, Ivory coast etc.how do u expect them to come to nigeria when u can't even say bonjour in french? Francophones are the majority in cameroon. so you cannot possible appreciate cameroonian music when u can't even say understand french.

also, note too that, cameroonian musician mostly do what we call makosa. its a brand of music, dont know if we even know that. because i am a nigerian, i never knew all these until i visited cameroon where i am presently. my brother's and sisters, the rate of nigerians in cameroon is alarming. so pls come visit too before criticizing their musician.
Thanks SP

Thanks SP. tell them. they surely have no idea. most of them haven't even visited other countries.I am proudly Cameroonian but have grown up with a lot of nigerians that sometimes those Nigerian names sound Cameroonian to me. I have never seen a cameroonian who is not a proud. i also nigerian friends who have grown up all their lives in cameroon and are more cameroonian than nigerians even.

as for you onome. i have never denied nigeria's superiority over cameroon. i am very proud of nigeria in several aspects especially in the entertainment industry. but then i am just against the fact that u speak like there are not big artists in cameroon. reason why i had to give u some names up there. And yes, i have seen a couple of cameroonian movies on africa magic.

but then, this again goes to my point up there that, cameroonain majority is french, so majority of cameroonian movies are done in french. the few done in english language are not widely known, bcus our national television channel most of the time advertise but the french movies. anglophones only struggle to get theirs broadcast in other channels.so its but normal that u do not get to see most of cameroon movies on african magic for they are french. Thus if u are interested in watching cameroonian movies and you can understand french, then tune to CRTV every day at 6:30pm

Please people stop hating!
No one has anything against Nigerians or P Square the syndicate had an issue with MTN so why are you all taking it so personally? Not everything is an attack on Nigeria. Nigerians do their thing and so do Cameroonians.I've got Nigerian family and friends and I do realise that Nigerians can be very insular and tend to only appreciate what is Nigerian. Cmaeroonians are more open and accepting of other cultures. Some of the most widely acclaimed African artists are from Cameroon but Nigerians do not know them because 1. they tend not to know of anything which is not Nigerian 2. they are mostly French-speaking 3. they do genres like soul and jazz which the average person may not be attuned to.
to name a few 1. Manu Dibango- Africa's most acclaimed jazz musician sampled by everyone from Michael Jackson to Rihanna- ever hear of 'Mama say Mama sa Makossa? 2. Les Nubians- Grammy nominated, Soul Train and NAACP Award winners 3. Wes Madiko- best known for "In Youpendi", a song from The Lion King II soundtrack 4. Richard Bona - was the Musical Director on Harry Belafonte's European Tour 5. Upcoming artists like Andy Allo who is a protegy of non other than the Artist formerly known as Prince.

I'm a P-Squared fan but Cameroon has nothing to fear from Nigeria musically. Just because you have the grace to be a large country doesn't give you the right ot bully others especially from a place of ignorance.

We should be encouraging one another Africans not trading insults. That is a disgrace to the continent- is this progress?

Debra and Onome jawe!!!

However, i do not think that staging a protest against p-square( a fellow african artiste) is the best way for the cameroonians to express their grievances. Such an act create a wrong signal and create bad blood between both countries. I am a nigerian, but i believe that all african man has the potential to excel in his/her chosen pursuits. If the late Michael Jackson was going to Cameroon will their musicians initiate this problem or ask for equal pay ? First the MTN decision is stictly a business one and the South African company believes they will get a good return on their investment . That's why they pay some artists higher than others . So the Cameroonian musician strike is just jealousy and Naijaphobia . When superstar Nollywood actors and actresses go to act in Cameroon do their local actors also ask for equal pay ? In the capitalist world some are better remunerated than others .

Another America?? You must be joking! Who wants to go to ur yeye gerdamarine country..ur best artistes in cameroon cant touch wizkid an up and coming atriste not to talk of PSquare. How many of ur artistes hv won an mtv award or has kanye ever identified with any of ur artistes? If ur atristes were that good mtn won't pay them less than Psquare so y r u mad? 9jas don't get mad when star invites kanye west and pay him more, so y r these francophones always so damn violent and unruly, they can start a war over trivial issues...Nikki Just accept say OGA na Master and stop talking meaningless thrash on here..Cameroon ke? Tufiapkwa!
you lot r funny
Yerrp | 5/21/2012 11:11:20 AM
Didn't Nigerian artist do this too?
Remember when the nigerian artists too protested to the likes of "Star" and those companies bringing in foreign acts, to make use of Nigerian artists instead and pay the Nigerian artists the money they are paying the foreign artists. You lot have forgotten?

Cameroon, is simply doing the same. All in the name to build theirs.

It's very funny to me how Nigerians always want to claim superiority over other African countries.. and I still wonder what do we have aprt from our number that makes us? And yet that number is killing us because we can't even take care of the teeming population.everybody has a right to protest and what better avenue to do so than the time they know they'd be heard.. Granted our Nigerian artistes are gifted, but how will i know the gifted cameroonian artiste when I do not speeak their Language.. Naija rem that it is in this same continent that you have Tunisia, Egypt,,Morocco, South Africa etc y we no dey do giant of Africa to those countries... respect other countries they are afterall neighbours and if something should happen in Nigeria; its to their country we would all scram to.

I must admit that this is one great insight. It suelry gives a company the opportunity to get in on the ground floor and really take part in creating something special and tailored to their needs.
