The late rap artiste’s 2008 model Nissan maxima car ran into a parked lorry in front of Alakara Police station, Mushin and he died on the Thursday April 22, 2010. Issues were raised on the cause of his death and several causes have been reported but Doctors at the hospital where he passed on said he had a heart attacks seven times and he was revived each time but died when he had the eightieth one. He has been buried in a NGN150,000 casket with fans and colleagues turning out in huge numbers even with the change in time from 12 noon to about 9AM when it said. The news now is his mom, Mrs. Olaonipekun blames the hospital for his death as she informs that “…They also said they didn’t have equipment for the stomach x ray. They said that blood started entered his brain but that they will suck it out. They did. They complained that he was not eating. The people at LUTH didn’t take good care of him. They gave him different food and his tommy was swollen. The nurses didn’t listen to any of the complaint because they claimed we shouldn’t teach them their job. They insisted on feeding him through the mouth even when he wasn’t digesting it. He gradually deteriorated and was not responding to signs and gestures. He wasn’t talking and in the evening of Friday, April 22, 2010 when he died, his body temperature was very high.” Things you might not know about Da Grin.Da Grin started out rapping in English but “I decided to rap in Yoruba because I understand it better than English. It is not that I can’t do English rap but I want to represent my origin and I rap in my mother tongue. I respect my colleagues that rap in English too”, Dagrin had said. It must be general knowledge now that Dagrin was a phenomenon at the busy computer village in Ikeja, Lagos as a phone vendor after the release of his first album. Things went really bad then and he needed to survive. If you didn’t know, no thank you needed. He started his music career on LEO records in 2006 where he released his debut album. He was with the label until 2008 when he called it quits. “I left after my contract expired and my first album didn’t even enjoy good promotion”, said Dagrin. After his exit from Leo, he faced serious financial challenges. He forfeited the apartment that had been given to him by his label within their office premises in Magodo and he struggled to get a place of his own so took the ‘50 cent’( an artiste he takes as a role model) and went all out ‘hustling’ at the notorious computer village in Ikeja. The Black Maxima car with which he had the accident was presented to him by his record label, Edlyne Records, and he had also send that the automobile has the customised plate number, Dagrin 03 because two bigger cars were on the way. Until his death, Dagrin was just a school certificate holder with intentions of going back to school after taking his music career to a desired level. Friends and colleagues agree that he was a Very respectful & humble before and AFTER he blew…unlike some other artistes.

My condolences go to his family. It's heart shattering to have a family member die especially a child. Our prayer is that we outlive our parents. From what I've read and heard, Dagrin was DRUNK and driving late at night when he had the accident. How would one explain how he ran into a STATIONARY truck? When one drives under the influence, not only do you put yourself at risk but other innocent people as well. There's no excuse for getting behind the wheels when your alcohol level is beyond recommended. I hope this unfortunate incident teaches a lesson. After all said and done, Dagrin did not deserve to die but his mother should ask herself some tough questions and see if the accident would have happened if Dagrin had been SOBER.

i was going to drop a similar comment but you have spoken my mind.without taking anything from the palpable grief the family must understandably be feeling right now,and fully understanding what the woman is going through the hospital doctors and nurses are not GOD.from someone that was there i was told that he was put in the vip ward where even governors and other wealthy nigerians would have been if they were admitted to luth second they cant import medical equipments because of dagrin and can only use what they have on ground.like you mentioned the main and underlying cause of the unfortunate accident was driving under the influence. i will advice the family to put a closure to the sad incident, and use his death to set up a foundation against driving under the influence, sensitizing his many young fans so that at least something good will come out of the incident.i nearly killed myself the very same way some yrs ago when i was on holidays in nigeria drunk driving and i had a close shave with death even here on the british motorways after i got on the highway the night after clubbing and drinking myself to s****dity.let us be honest with ourselves and face up to the real issue

I realy dont know where people got the idea dat he was drunk. Yes, they found some drinks in his car. No, he wasnt drunk. The doctors confirmed that there was no alcohol found in his system. Nd if his family werent satisfied with the way dagrin was treated why wasnt he transfered to anoda hospital? Why did they leave him to die there? Now he's dead they'r blamin d hospital. They had ova 1 week to do something about it. Evry tin is now " had I known" but its too late.

I've read quite a few news reports and almost every one of them had a different story, so the question of whether DaGrin was intoxicated or not up to this point would be mere surmise on my part, as only one report I have read mentioned it fleetingly. Drinking under the influence if proven to be so is always one of the "real" issues when it comes to road accidents and fatalities, but I believe that his mother raises a point that's also a real and important issue. The fact that governors and other wealthy persons are treated there is not somehow an indication that the hospital is properly equipped. No, they probably could not fly in equipment, if such was needed, just for DaGrin's case, but as far as I see it no hospital should have to do that, because they should already be on site. The woman is merely raising a valid point that yes, while they are not God, they are obviously always not sufficiently equipped with the resources, training, skill or experience necessary to save lives especially in serious trauma cases. Maybe her perspective might be a bit jaded because of her grief, but if her account is true, then some things sound a bit off. As someone said a sober person could have had an equally devastating accident under different circumstances, what would we say were the real issue or issues then?

fair enough, but what really can the medical director of luth and his residents do about this?there is absolutely nothing they can do about it if the relevant government authorities have refused to upgrade the hospital equipments. i will also re iterate again for the avoidance of any doubt that the private v.i.p ward where da grin was kept is not the average nigerian government hospitals,it had relatively everything needed t take care of him.i hope you realise that 1.da grin's mother is not a medical personell hence she s not speaking from a platform of knowledge..all she saw was her son not improving for whatever reasons she didnt know and then taking it out on the over worked, underpaid resident doctors who many would have been on 24 hours call with maybe 2 hrs sleep and workng under pressure from the press, from da grin's fans family e.t.c all for 150,000 naira a month 2.she is overcome by grief, and according to the five steps of grief ppl go through, blame is passed onto everybody in sight which is what the woman is doing. contrary to yor assertions, alcohol makes a massive difference in responce time. if he had not been drinking, his responce would have been sharper and quicker trust me i know cause i nearly caused my own death as well on the british motorway due to drinking and driving the day after.unlike him i was lucky for the god roads and the warning metal stud barriers on the road. every individual's life is in the hands of GOD,for her to state that the hospitals killed her son is a very unfair comment most of those doctors you see earn between 70,000 naira and at the most i.e working in oil companies 250,000 naira less than a banker and still yet they have to be on 24 hrs call at least once a week, they work under terrible conditions and several cases of assault.my gf who is a med doctor told me of an incident where a group of area boys brough their leader who had been shot into the emergency ward and they were ordered to treat him with all sorts of weapons and charms in full view.the guys told them that if their leader died, one of them will definitely follow him to heaven...for something that isnt their fault but the press and public dont hear this
Nicole | 5/18/2010 6:58:58 AM |
Why do you seem so upset? Are we supposed to be fighting? What assertions are you claiming I made? I re-read what I posted and nowhere did I assert, as you put it, that alcohol does not and I quote "make a massive difference in response time." In fact, that was not the subject of my discussion at all. I was not with DaGrin. I cannot say if he was inebriated and so I refused to make any assertions concerning that and still will not make any. The point of my discussion is that his mother, if she so feels, has the right to air her concerns, regardless of how anyone else feels, of how much anyone is paid or underpaid and overworked. She can do that. Moreover, you have said it yourself, on the subject of "real" issues and I quote again "the relevant government authorities have refused to upgrade the hospital equipments." My point was and is merely that other possibilities or contributing factors don't have to be ignored as so called real issues when looking at the larger picture. Since you have proof that we are dealing with someone who was intoxicated, let's take another scenario, one involving someone completely sober who swerves to avoid something or someone running into his/ her path, with life threatening injuries as the result. The person dies. Well, maybe it's their time but what if? What are the real issues there? Carelessness, maybe, but does it mean that the person's life cannot be saved? That sometimes depends on those very things I mentioned in my post. My point? There's never any one real issue, primary ones maybe, but the final outcome is always the result of many issues. I continue to pray for his family.
