X-rated movies banned in Ghana
Story by Administrator
Worried by the alarming rate at which “obscene” movies are gaining massive acceptance in Ghana, the country’s Ministry of Information working in collaboration with the censors board and the Movie Union has finally wielded the sledge hammer on the film producers by banning the sell of x-rated movies in Ghana.

The ban, according to a reliable source became effectively last month. But reacting to this development, a Ghanaian actor, who’s currently working in Nigeria, Actus Frank, do not see anything wrong with the“soft-porn”movies as they call it in Ghana. “I have been part of the trend. If I must do it, then I will do it.

There’s no harm in doing it. After all, it’s selling in Ghana. If I do it, it’s left with the producer to decide whether he would want to allow the movie to be released unedited. It’s none of my business. I don’t have a problem doing what I have to do because we are talking of my career here.” he said.

Frank however admitted that the ban will help to slow the pace of the influx of nudity films in Ghana. ‘I think it’s the best thing the government have done to slow the pace of the influx of films of nudity in the country.’ As it stands now, any films with scenes of nudity will be properly censored and prevented from entering the market.

Before now, some Ghanaian actors have raised their voices against the excessive use of sex to sell movies and the increase of “soft porn” Ghanaian movies. One of the country’s popular actors, Agya Koo aka Bidam recently took to the streets of Kumasi (Oseikrom) protest against the prevailing use of sex to sell movies in Ghana.

Agya who also doubles as the most highly paid actor in that country said, most Ghanaian movies released over the past months, have too many nude scenes which is against our culture as Ghanaians, so as an actor, he can’t just sit down and watch some producers destroy the industry that made him what he is today. “During the days of “I told you so” and other great Ghanaian movies in the past, that was not how our ladies exposed themselves” he was quoted to have said.

Also pretty actress, Vivian Jill Lawrence, who fans call Ama blamed the marketers for the ugly development in the industry. During our recent interview with Van Vicker, he lamented over the increasing rate at which soft-porn movies were gaining recognition in Ghana.

Ghana does not know how to do anything else, except p**no. 'Bad market go follow them now.' Even women who claim to be married, go naked and f**k in movies with all alacrity.
May God help Ghana.
I dont know the difference between them and Soddom and Gomorah.

I do agree with you Haba and Amaka....I don't know where that phenomenon of "nudity and graphic sexual display" in Ghanaian movies ever emerge from....It is so sad and the most pathetic aspect of it is that the movies could have done fine without the sex scenes....The sex scenes are just there for the sake of "impressing the West"...B.S....They are copying bindly from the West and promoting immorality..

Can you imagine a Produccer released a near-p**nographic movie in Ghana dubbed "Hot Fork" and goes ahead to defend it unreasonably..Its all balloney!!!

WHAT A LEGACY
Jonathan, Accra-Ghana | 7/7/2010 9:00:28 PM |
Sophie..Please....If that actor wants to break into the limelight, is the best way to do that through scandals...Okay, let's say he becomes famous after that, what kind of legacy would such a celebrity leave for the younger generation and his numerous fans (if he would ever have any).
Does he think he would ever be considered a "role model" for the young...What would such a role model teach..that the best way to make it in life is through scandals and immorality? Think about it!!!

are you s****d?
this article is about banning x-rated movies in Ghana, and you are bringing up irrelevant stuff.
instead of you to discuss the topic, you are going off into something else.
or you are just trying to shift the attention elsewhere?
the only thing you people keep bringing up is cossy, thats the only one you can name.
Cossy this and that.
she has already received her Wahala for that one, has she done a movie since?
no producers are calling her to act anymore.
so whats the beef?

What nonsense. Did anyone force you to watch the movies? it is clearly written that it is for a certain age group. Movies are there to portray reality. So ban cigarettes which are more harmful, what about alcohol? Even ban everything. nonsense. Holier than the popes

It is not about pretending. Even the US is not showing this kind except p**n or .... The African tradition is different from Western tradition. If we try to copy everything, we are doom for destruction. Our movies are no longer portraying our culture instead trying to emulate Oyibo. These movies are being watch by little children. I have a two year old who like to watch our movies. I have to be careful what he watches since he knows how to play our dvd, lol

YOU ALL NEED DELIVERANCE | 7/3/2010 9:28:38 PM
Am so glad that the movie is out of makets, i will advise all the actors and actreses that took part in that movie to go for seriouse deliverance. My God, i dint watch the movie, the commercial alone is nothing to talke about. You are free to do what ever movie you want, but any movie a child can not site with me and watch, its equally bad for an adult to watch. Please what moral are you teaching your children, your community, your county, and society at large, please go for deliverance. Remember soddom and gommera.

There's a difference
Nancy | 7/4/2010 6:15:36 AM
I don't think African producers are ready to do sex scene in a movie. To me they really do not know the difference between putting a sex scene in a movie and making a sex movie. Because movies that they make thinking they're putting in a "sex scene' turns out to be more like a sex movie. And is not about a person pretending to be a virgin as some are saying but it's about us Africans and where we come from. You know that anything that has to do with sex/sexuality is totally in hidden among Africans. I have an African American friend that watches African movies a-lot and she once told me the love she has for African movies beacuse it does not portray sexual acts like most Hollywood movies does, which sent a bad message to youths but especially African American youths. I was smiling so hard hearing that because as an African it makes you proud. And look what our producers/actors has turn into. This is why i watch more old school movies then the ones these days.

Stop Moaning Everyone
kwame-ofori balogun | 7/5/2010 6:31:01 AM
its funny how you people keep hiding under the so-called 'african culture' in criticising these sex scenes. You lot must have encountered the phrase 'make-believe', used in describing movies. Movies arent real and are not intended to be real except when they are true-life stories or biographies. I think your perception of what a sex scene means and what it denotes in your minds should be looked at objectively.

If you dont find a movie comfortable to watch, for any reason you have, SIMPLY dont watch or invest in buying them at home in the first place. That's why movies are rated. There are lots of family movies out there to see if you want a movie to watch with young ones. Please grow up and stop moaning about this issue. A wise man once said 'dont ask a question to which you already know the answer'.

I am anticipating that my comments will spur a lot of anger in you nigerians. And for the ghanians who are always using attack as a form of defence, i reserve my comments, dont think i'm supporting you though. I know you nigerians are quite smart and will probably be picking on my spellings and trying to figure out my nationality by now, so you can attack me with abusive words like you always do. If that''s the case, I should let you know that you'll just end up wasting your time. My names above reflect my TRUE natiionality.

Sex scenes are just there like any other scene in a movie. How many people complain that someone is killed in a movie, yet we live in a society where killing is a grave crime. Nearly everyone watch action movies, in which some one lose their life. I take it that you're quite aware that someone's death is not real. So why is it so hard to believe that these sex scenes are just as unreal as any other scene? Looking beyond the obvious, it is apparent that people are trying to create reality for sex scenes in movies. How sad is that?

IGNORANCE
IgboQueen | 7/6/2010 1:00:10 AM |
Ignorance is truly a disease.
did you watch the whole movie? or did you just watch part of it?
although what she did was over the line, she showed what happens to some women when they get trafficked to Europe and sold into prostitution. I don't think its sleeping with dogs, but showing how some women go to extremes just for money.
so what do you mean this is what is happening IN NIGERIA? IN NIGERIA? are you s****d, retarded, or slow? which one?
if you can't understand the basic story line to a movie, it makes me wonder if half your brain is dead.

THE AMERICAN WILL NEVER EAT FUFU OR EVEN IF HE DOES EAT WITH HIS HAND. EVERY SOCIETY AND THEIR CULTURE! THINGS ARE DONE DIFFERENTLY IN DIFFERENT SOCIETIES AND WE SHOULD NOT BE IGNORANT OF THAT. WHEN NIGERIA STARTED THIS MOVIE THING, IT WAS JUST CLASSIC. IT WAS A FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT. THE WHOLE FAMILY COULD SIT DOWN AND WATCH AND LAUGH AND HAVE FUN. GHANA CAME AND THEY WANT TO RUN BEFORE THEY CRAWL. WHAT A SHAME! NOW, U ARE AFRAID TO WATCH GHANA MOVIE WITH A TEENAGER BECOS YOU DONT KNOW WHAT THEY WILL BE SHOWING NEXT! ARE WE STILL IN THE ERA OF SLAVERY WHERE WE WORSHIP EVERYTHING THE WHITE MAN DOES EVEN IF IT S DISDAINFUL AND DISGRACEFUL. PLS, LETS PRESERVE AND BE PROUD OF OUR CULTURE. THESE AMERICANS ARE AND RESPECT US FOR HOW DECENT WE ARE, HOW WE CARRY OURSELVES WITH SUCH GRAVITAS! WE SHOULD LEARN TO APPRECIATE THAT OURSELVES AND NOT COMPROMISE. THANK YOU GOVERNMENT! FOR ONCE YOU DID SOMETHING WISE!!! THANK U LORD. YOU ARE STILL WATCHING OVER AFRICA. GOD MUST BE A GHANAIAN!!!

Some of the sex scenes in these Ghanaian movies are irrelevant to the story most of the time. When it comes to Venus Film Production and Sacrote Sarfo's movies, it just a waist of time. Heart of Men, Hot Fork, Kiss Me If You Can, 4Play, The Game......are example of the sex abuse. The Heart of Men trailer was totally unacceptable. The sex scenes in Heart of Men has no relevance to the movie, it was a useless movie.
4Play trailer is defferent from the actual movie because some scenes had to be deleted. I mean can you imagine, some of the scene was so bad that it wasn't appropriate for GHANA movie. I find Venus Film, Sacrote Sarfo, and Fran Rajah Arase's work always have ecess nudity.
All I'm saying is that you must show eccess nudity, it shouldn't be showed in the trailer and it must ralate the movie.

i think cossy agreeing to act such movie was bad. people already know her for been malicious and some see her as a lady that can do anything for money. so foe her to act that scene is just not right fro her personality. if a genevieve nnaji or ini edo gets to act such movie, people might not read different meaning to it as it is right now. we need to be careful. The movie "Heart of Men" should be banned completely. i support that.
