Nollywood harbours lots of greedy producers – Kate Henshaw-Nuttal

YOU actually studied science in the university?

I studied medical biology, but I‘m living my passion which is entertainment. Someone said to me that the sweetest thing you can ever get is being paid for something you love doing, something as easy to you as sleeping and waking.

Is there any occasion where you have had to put what you studied into practice?

I have sometimes had to apply my knowledge on set where there is a laboratory and I can show people the proper way to tackle medically related issues. No knowledge is lost in life.

You have been married to your husband who is not actually a Nigerian for so many years...

(Cuts in) what‘s wrong with that? There are people who are married to Indians...

Tell us about it, do you enjoy it?

I enjoy it, it is perfect, it has been 11 years and I am still there, nothing has happened.

So if you should compare it to being married to a Nigerian...

I‘m not comparing because I don‘t know; I have not been married before.

If you were to do it again, would it still be a white man?

He will still be my husband, whether he is white, orange, black or green, you people should leave this white man, plenty people are married to white men all over the country.

Have you ever thought of producing your own movie?

Yes, I have, when the time is ripe I will produce my own movie.

What is going to determine the right time?

The right people, the right script and money of course, everything involves money. I don‘t want to do a three million, four million film. I want a film that I will be proud of anywhere I go. I don‘t like to rush into things, I am a perfectionist, if it is not worth it, I would rather not dabble into it.

Apart from Globacom and Onga endorsement, which other deals are you involved in?

I do a lot of charity work. I‘m a golden link for the prevention of cervical cancer in the country. There are also other bits and pieces that I do just to contribute my own quota to the society.

Which one gives you more fulfilment?

Everything, I always look out to do more, find causes that I am very passionate about and lend my support to them in any way that I can.

How do you fashion out time for everything?

There is a timetable, they give me their schedule and I make time for them, I am a very organised person.

How do you combine home-keeping and all these activities?

It is easy. My husband is very supportive; he allows me do my work.

If you were not in the entertainment industry, where would you be?

I don‘t know, I have no idea (what would I be doing?)

You don‘t think you would be a chef?

(Laughter) like have a kitchen or something? No if I am going to be a chef I will not be there always. On the day I am coming, that will be the day people will know that I am there and that day the meal will be extra special. The days may be two Fridays in a month, first Friday and last Friday and the place will be shaking because people will be filled with expectation.

Apart from entertainment, are you investing in any business, keeping money aside for a rainy day?

I cannot tell you that, it is my personal information.

You can tell me that you are doing something...

I‘m insuring my life and my family. I don‘t do stocks, I don‘t do bonds, I don‘t do shares because everybody has seen what has happened.

Have you always been shying away from investing in stocks and shares?

Yes, because I don‘t know how they make the money. I would rather keep my money in the bank. Or invest in buildings.

What if you keep the money in the bank and the bank collapses or becomes distressed?

I have been very blessed; it has not reached my side. God knows I work hard for my money, I don‘t steal it, so my money cannot go like that. Nothing can happen to my money wherever it is because it is not stolen money.

What is your assessment of what is going on in the Nigerian movie industry?

There is recession and the producers are complaining that there are no jobs. Why won‘t they complain when they are doing part one to four and part one to five films? People are getting tired of wasting their money on stories that last forever. One part film is enough but because they are greedy and they want to eat from all corners. There is economic recession all over the world but people also have to watch their pocket and watch their pennies. If you have a good story a part one and two will suffice or even a part one, I don‘t know why it has to go into three, four and five and at the beginning of part two you will see half of part one inside it. It is just the result of greed.

What about the fact that they have all these unions that are breaking into factions?

There is no standard, there was no blueprint for this industry initially, the thing kind of started on its own and there is no proper structure, everybody is just doing what they like.

So what does that say about the future of the industry?

They have to get organised, we are already losing it. We paved the way then musicians came from the back and overtook us. Even the Yoruba movie industry appears to be more organised than the English movie industry.

There was a time we were actually comparing ourselves to Hollywood...

Never. I repeat we can never compare ourselves to Hollywood; they are miles ahead of us, eons and centuries away from us. The only thing we can say we have is our stories but it depends on the way we sell them. We can‘t even begin to compare with Hollywood, there is no way. Yes we are the second largest in the world but that is based on the quantity of films we sell, not on technical know how.

What has been your most recent job?

I did a Yoruba film of recent. I did a film called Etiketa with Saheed Balogun, Uncle Olumide, Doris Simon and a few other people, the film was directed by Daniel Ademilokun.

You actually preferred it to English films?

Oh yes, they are so organised, they pay close attention to detail, costuming, make-up. They were together. I know how many times on set where some Yoruba actors or people doing Yoruba films will just come and offer to help Saheed. People that were not even working and were not required on the set came in and offered to help. We don‘t have that in the English film industry.

KATE GO Ahead
LABALABA | 8/2/2010 11:30:47 PM
Last week, when Nuella came talking about she don't have a white Boy friend, people were in her defense as to her right for what she could say. Now even, educated Journalists could set the platform of their interview on the fact that someone married a white. Why would that be a primary question. I said it was wrong last week with Nuella flipping her lips, and I still say it's wrong asking Kate such question. Watch out Nigerians - little by little you're becoming a country of beggots with this white or no white issue. Women who didn't Marry white should shot the Fu_ _K up and move on with their not-better-than-w***e lives. Stop singing with "I didn't marry a white" - It's uncivilize! This is really becoming an issue for Nigerians (I'm a Nigerian). May be the whole country should be taken out temporarily to developed country for few months, so their thought could get past the Okrika juju-fuji and labaruwa mentality. Man Fu_ _K everybody!
As for the MotherF_ _ kers who called themselves Producers, they won't have to call themselves Producers any more, because Nollywood has just crashed, also Ghanawood, and sierraleonewood needs not starting. Over doing bad habits and greed is the foundation for backwardness.
KATE, remember that movie they put you in that's supposed to be a hit like the previous one in which you are a battered wife; this movie didn't turn out like that, so they kept having part 3,4,5,6,7,8 ..... dump Producers. Are you there Kate - tell them correct spelling is DILEMMA, and not DILEMA. Wow they made made 8 part movie with one title and nobody caught the mistake throughout.
Then the i***ts would call part 1&2 one name and the sequel 3&4 another, so people who watched 1&2 would never find 3&4.
Hey Kate, I'm not through - They now coming out with Part 1,2,3 in one package of movie they just sold as part 1&2 packaging last year, so the guys who already paid to see 1&2 will have to pay for 1,2&3 package if they want to see part 3.
There's this movie they featured Nanso Diobi, the package shows his picture and the right title in the front and wrong total infos at the back, including the wrong cast list. How about 20 traillers of other movies in the beginning and middle of other movie. How about sleezy Product endorsements squeezed into scripts. How about that "Joke" for Scrolling Marque of ad and phone numbers on the screen, infos that should be shown once or limited to the outer skin of packaging. Wait there is logo or emblem that's sitting on the screen all the time ... all of the above make Nollywood movies look like high school Projects.
It's a Million things that's wrong with these movies that attributes to greed, we as Consumer have got the list, and we have stopped buying.
The stores that stock from wall to wall in Houston, Texas are giving up, so is the largest Nigerian Movie carrier on ebay .... and all of these happening when Nollywood had just started.
Nevertheless, KATE HENSHAW IS ONE #1 FOR ME. Any turtle will cry seing your performance in "Million tears", You did it again in "Show me Heaven", and then that one where Ebube is your Lawyer friend and your Husband is one Ass Hole who calls you OL BOY..... You make it look like Nobody in Hollywood or Nollywood would substitute those parts. I followed you since the LOVE MEDICINE with this c***y girl .......... Yes... Shawn George! that was my first date with you. I didn't think you've started too long back then, but you were good as the Bewitched beautiful woman you were supposed to play.
The damage of greed is gone beyond repair and with the Movie buyers back out, Nollywood is bound to fall. Kate, you are too good ... Do what I did decades ago, grab your lovely Husband and few things and get out of Nigeria. It always seem like it's gonna get better, then the worse happens in the hands of incompetent rulers each time ... It's a caused Nation!

I feel so sorry for weirdos like Labalaba who have lost their identity in life and have put on the fake identity of so called "successful nations"!
Your comments about fragmentation of Nollywood films are correct .
But this human greed which is NOT PECULIAR to Nigerians only! It doesn't justify your running down your Motherland ,Nigeria .
Any one who does that is a b*****d!
Labalaba your comments on this website show you up as very unstable or just plain ignorant
You cannot even spell properly and link your sentences together in logical sequences !
I am sure you pride yourself with those ridiculous degrees from one of the mushroom ,back-alley universities in the USA, Canada or Europe!
Also you're doing security jobs and other menial jobs and living in a slum , somewhere abroad !
Yet you have the effrontery to write r*****h about Nigeria, advising people to leave !
Leave for where? !
Who told you that if millions like you packed your bags and left Nigeria; never to return; that Nigerians would even bat an eyelid?
That would be good riddance to r*****h Nigerians like you and more space for fresh air to circulate freely!
Nobody would care a hoot or even miss your absence
Kate has the choice to relocate permanently but she lives in Nigeria because she loves Nigeria!
Also, she knows she is enjoying the type of life, standard of living, respect and recognition which she wouldn't get in the Western society!

Kate you are great

kate Hanshaw, though good in acting but failed in this interview.
She's bold enough to criticise the industry that made her what she is today rather than profering solution.

As for Labalaba, Nigeria is too big to know if you exist or not. So f**k your head out of this country and never return. f**l!

Hey, Cave something (woman or man), Some how, you thing everyone has to be proud of Nigeria just because they were once born there .... You are one of those people with elementary sense of life. And seems you don't put your progress first. I certainly know more about Nigeria than you do. Nigeria is a piece of land (property) that belongs to probably only 5,000 people ... that includes Abacha family, Some Alhaji thieves, and Babangida with his Kaduna Mafias. When was the last time you had electricity for 48 hours Zoom? Well, some people in Nigeria have it a year straight without a blink. Oil comes out of Nigeria, but they have to line up several days at the gas station. Life was better in Nigeria in the 50's and 60's than it is now. The British actually needs to come back and seize it so the little fragile sense of patriotism you have can finally vanish. Hey, I didn't keep up with this, so tell me; What is the verdict on those Senators tearing each others cloth out in the house few weeks ago? It should be important since these are the people who put themselves on 2 million dollar a year salaries each. As good as my new Country is, Obama only earns $250,000, that's 1/8 th of what a Nigerian Senator gets paid for spitting at each other's face.
Augusta, If you must reply, please write in English, and Don't you ever-never-ever-ever-never-never-ever talk to me about coming back to Nigeria .... I ran to the restroon and threw up when I first read it.
