In the face of economic meltdown, and massive unemployment befalling the impoverished country, Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, their president is engaged in misplaced priorities as he has just sunk almost 300,000 pounds sterling into a movie industry in Nigeria where the screen idol and mother of one, Genevieve Nnaji plays a prominent role in.
When President Yahya Jammeh announced last year that he’s a big fan of Nigeria movies little did his subject who he rules over in Gambia know that the amiable and fun-loving head of state has secretly reached the final stage with some Nollywood practitioners to sink about 300,000 pounds sterling into a movie, all thanks to a highly connected London based Gambian, Fatimah Jabbie, who broker the deal between the president and the Nollywood movie experts. Reports in the grapevine even suggest that Jammeh could not hide his love for the lady, as he unequivocally warned against any kissing to be extended to Ms. Jabbie, who was featured in the movie as one of the actresses.
As the producers of the film are working very hard to finetune the “finishing touches” of the highly anticipated movie titled “The Mirror Boy's heritage, it has been gathered that the film which was earlier earmarked for the people of Nigeria had to be changed from Nigerian to Gambia, www.nigeriafilms.com exclusively gathered. The change of venue for the movie shooting was largely because of lack of funds. The Cross Rivers State Government, the original party that expressed interest in the movie, could not foot the multimillion dollars bills, sources said.
“Unfortunately, the Cross Rivers State Government was not able to provide the Nollywood film company with competitive rates or enough logistical support to shoot film in Nigeria. It was a classical case of no money,” said a highly placed source.
Having been tipped about the Nollywood proposed film, miraculously, and from nowhere, the Gambian Government stepped in. They were just too happy to have Nollywood come shoot in their country on the sole condition that the company capture their amazing landscapes and culture in the film, said our source.
According to the report gathered by www.nigeriafilms.com “This trailer has been hurriedly put together to meet a deadline for a state function in Gambia, and which the President was to be shown, so don’t even judge yet. Some of the footage of the country is breathtaking, as you all know Gambia is an amazingly beautiful country.
The Nollywood film is expected to be launched in The Gambia soon. President Jammeh is expected to grace the launching ceremony without any of stakeholders who pioneered the purported deal being intimated about the new developmemt.”
While there are activities in the air to celebrate the Nollywood film in Gambia, the country’s life expectancy rate is declining dramatically—thanks to poor health delivery system.
Taiwan, recently extended a huge amount of money to help boost Gambia’s health sector, but donor funds often lands in the hands of corrupt officials. Corruption is endemic in Jammeh’s Government. Government projects are never advertized. They are awarded to parties who are willing to bribe officials in Government.

Gambia president is a dictator and corrupt and no one in Gambia dare questioned the source of his wealth. He will destroy Gambia economy by venturing in every economic sector in the Gambia with Gambians money. The sole objective is to politicise these sectors which strengthen his eternity rule for Gambia. His economic ventures are distorting the economy of Gambia. This has started be seen with the shortages of commodities in his economic sphere of control. This is because of the monopoly he acquires as a result of free capital investment, free labour, free taxation, free transport etc. All the cost of inputs into his businesses is free provided by the state and Gambians. This enables him to sell extremely cheap to the public in order to politicise the masses. The result is loss of employment and other business in the sector. It simply, impossible to compete or run your business with him. Since he alone cannot supply the demands of the sectors, it lead to scarcity of these products, which is happening currently and the worst to come. The Ruler is very irrational, ruthless and incompetence to rule Gambia. You are very accurate in description of this movie and the Gambian ruler. However, the Nigerian actors and actresses are obviously delighted to come across such an irrational ruler. I am somewhat ashamed that in this day and age, we have taken an unverified report from a web-based news paper run from the bedroom of an exiled Gambian in the States (Freedom Newspaper) and wasted our precious time making comments, ranging from the ridiculous to the outright s****d.
First and foremost, President Jahmeh, whatever his economic or human rights credentials, has not put any money in the shooting of the said film. I can authoritatively confirm that THE MIRROR BOY is a co-production between OHTV and THE NOLLYWOOD FACTORY. Gambia was chosen as the location for the film because of the beauty of the place and because the President encouraged the production by providing security, locations and logistics.
As a Gambian who was supposed to be part of this production but a late withdrawal due to travel, I think that what the film has done for Gambia is greater that the touted 300,000 pounds. You cannot get the kind of positive publicity that the film has afforded Gambia as a country by taking an advert on CNN...and how much will that be? 300,000 pounds will probably get you two 30 second slots on CNN.
The film trailer, which I think is great and professionally done has been watched by over 10,000 people in a matter of weeks and it is a great advert for the Gambia and our fledgling film industry.
Those who have a problem with the President can seek other ways of getting at him instead of twisting what was a great effort at huge costs by UK based film makers to put Gambia on the world cinema map.
I am yet to see this film but just like every well meaning African and Gambian, I am eagerly awaiting its release. From all indications, an Oscar nomination is not far-fetched for a Gambian shot film and then let me hear all of those dissenting voices again.
For the avoidance of doubt, yes, there is a film called THE MIRROR BOY. It was shot in the Gambia with logistical support from the Gambian Government. No, it was not sponsored by the Gambian government and yes, such projects are great for the Gambian film industry. Long may they continue to come. Long may the government continue provide the enabling environment for them to operate. TIt brings investment into Gambia. It helps the transfer of technology and it provides employment for the teeming youths with talent to spare. What can be wrong about that. God bless OH TV and THE NOLLYWOOD FACTORY.

300000 pounds is not the figure u should be looking at. this is a story of Africa told by african and unity africans for the first time. i think the President is doing a good job and OH films is making it happen. The Mirror boy quality and storyline is perfect and for the first time in film of its kind to good head to heat with Hollywood films. Encourage one another is the only way africa can grow. In my 7yrs experience in African movies production, editing and marketing i give The Mirror Boy two thumbs up.

Pls africans appreciate this beautiful,talented young woman for using her talent in&for her land instead of the white people's land and respect the fact that she represents africa positively globally.Haters will die in jealousy because she is currently working on some big budget international movies to be premiered and released next year.

Toooo bad that in 2011 we still have disfunctional human beings who think a woman must end up in a man's house to be seen as complete. Thank God, he did not make marriage compulsory. Gene has made a difference in the world not just Africa. have you bothered to find out why she did not marry the father of her baby??or do you think she only wanted to get pregnant? have you even bothered to know if she ever wants to get married after that disappointment? in any case, is she fatima who connected this deal with the president? i dont want to belf that you Nigerian's still operate in this low mentality, i think it is just a question of hate and like it or not, it is God that makes everyone what they are. you want to be like GENE? This movie 'mirror boy' has a good message, that kids of african origin have better lives going to school in Africa and face less racism even though they still have a system of african diplomas not being considered worldwide. I know a lot of Gambians who decided to take their children back to their country until they reached adulthood and most of them turned out better than their african counterparts they left here. For Genevieve, ok so what? I dont see anything special with her. Nigerians like her cause she represents Nigerian beauty standard. I bet if she was a bit lighter or had her own hair on her head, she would not be considered. Im just saying. Nigerians can be racist and they flaunt too much about their yorubas in their movies, they dont even let other ethnic groups in Nigeria be represented. Gambia is more open to diverse ethnicities accross west africa. For president Jammeh he sure did wrong financing this project. The money could have gone on building nicer roads in the Gambia for example. genevieve Naji I respect her and dont want to backbite anyone but surely there are so many more beautiful women out there.
