For models, actresses and celebrities, their faces are their fortunes.

For us “civilians” having a beautiful face and sexy skin may not directly translate to money but it certainly gives us a great deal of confidence.

It isn’t surprising then the length that many women go to achieve the skin and complexion of the stars they idolise.

Cosmetic surgery and non-invasive procedures like chemical peels and laser resurfacing may be a little extreme if all you want is to have clear, healthy-looking skin, so try the tips below before you begin the search for a plastic surgeon.

Who knows, you may find you don’t need one after all.

• Exfoliate the skin. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and reveals the fresher, younger looking skin underneath.

A natural fibre or synthetic sponge is a good exfoliator for the body but if you want something more polished for your face, try a facial scrub.

Many facial scrubs contain ingredients that can unblock pores, mattify skin and more.

The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Oil Facial Exfoliator works well on oily skin while Forever Living’s Aloe Scrub is great for normal skin.

• Eat healthily and drink lots of water.

• Consider taking multivitamins. Check that the product you choose contains Vitamins A, B-complex, C, E and the mineral, Zinc, as these are all thought to promote healthy skin.

• Maintain the basic beauty routine of cleansing and moisturising the face. Do this morning and night, using products suited to your skin type.

• Use a good moisturiser all over your face and body. You’ll probably need a different moisturiser for your face as it is possible for the skin on the face to be oily while the skin on the body is normal or vice-versa.

• Avoid bleaching, toning or whitening creams. These products damage the skin. What’s more, the damage (patches of skin in different colours and thin skin) is often visible to the naked eye.

If you’re looking to change your body lotion, try Nivea Fair products. These products don’t necessarily make you lighter but they prevent you from getting darker.

• Use lotions, creams and even makeup that contain sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

• Don’t pick pimples. Doing so means the pimple will take longer to heal and may lead to scarring.

• Get enough sleep. Seven hours of sleep a night is just about right.

• Do some form of exercise regularly to keep your body feeling good and your skin looking better.
