Former Super Eagles winger, Finidi George has urged the current team to surpass the previous records set at the World Cup and qualify for the semi final stage of the competition.

Since the team debuted at the 1994 World Cup, Nigeria has always advanced to the knockout stage except during the 2002 World Cup and Finidi believes now is the time to raise the bar.

The former Ajax Amsterdam winger crossed the ball for Rashidi Yekini to score Nigeria’s first-ever goal at the World Cup.

He said that for Nigeria to get to the semi finals of the competition set to begin in Russia in June, the nation’s hopes rest more on the players than the coach.

Finidi said, “We have done well with the qualifiers in Africa. However, the Eagles need to take us to another level.

“Will this happen? I honestly don’t know. Everything depends on the players and not the coach.”

However, he called on the coach to select the right mix of players and get them well motivated to advance from Group D which also has Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.
