Popular gospel singer Sammie Okposo is dead,the Wellu Wellu master, as he is fondly called, was 51, Okposo was also a music producer, psalmist, and CEO of Zamar Entertainment, Sammie Okposo released his first album Addicted in 2004.


He bagged multiple awards including KORA Best Gospel Artiste in Africa (2006), Crown SABC Best of African Gospel (2014), Afro Hollywood UK Best Gospel Artiste (2005), NEA Best Gospel Artiste of the Year (2007&2013), and NMA Best Contemporary Gospel Artiste among others.

The singer was in the eye of the storm in January when he offered a public apology to his wife, Ozioma for alleged infidelity.

The apology came a day after a lady, known only as African Doll, accused him of impregnating and abandoning her.

The gospel musician told his fans that he would be taking a step back from his ministry to focus on restoration and seek forgiveness.

In the heat of the public conversation on the alleged infidelity, he removed himself from public spaces by deactivating his social media platforms but returned later.

The popular singer’s death was confirmed by the family in a statement signed by one Hecter Okposo.

In the statement, however, the family did not reveal the cause of Sammie’s death.

It read: “It is with a heavy heart but with total submission to God that I announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, Minister of God, Sammie Okposo.

“Sammie slept and went to be with the Lord on the morning of Friday, November 25, 2022.

“More details about the burial will be communicated soon.

“We are consoled because we know that he is with Jesus singing with angels.

“We kindly request that the family is allowed to grieve peacefully at this time.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has sympathised with family, friends and professional associates of renowned gospel singer, Sammie Okposo, whose demise on Friday left many in Nigeria and across the world severely shocked.

President Buhari spoke in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Friday.

He commiserated with the Christian community, particularly Okposo’s colleagues in gospel music and the younger generation, who have over the years identified with his elevating style of praise and worship.

Adesina added: “The President notes the unique platform of worship created by Okposo, Okposo Praise Party, his creative contributions to the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, and the inspiring role he played in grooming talents and mentoring them to stardom.

“President Buhari prays for the repose of the musician’s soul, urging the family to find solace in his investments of love.”
