Wayne Rooney has said that he was staying with Manchester United following persistent speculation he could make a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League.
Rooney’s agent, Paul Stretford, had been in China speaking to interested clubs but the United and England captain insisted he was staying put at Old Trafford.
“Despite the interest which has been shown from other clubs, for which I’m grateful, I want to end recent speculation and say that I am staying at Manchester United,”
Rooney said “I hope I will play a full part in helping the team in its fight for success on four fronts.It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it.
Rooney’s contract worth around £300,000-a-week is due to expire in 2019 but speculation that United’s record goalscorer could leave Old Trafford mounted this week after José Mourinho, the manager, admitted that there was “no guarantee” Rooney would stay. However, a deal with a Chinese Super League club worth up to £500,000-a-week was always going to be difficult to achieve before their transfer window closes on Tuesday.
