The problem of piracy has lingered for too long and this has been a source of sadness to Nollywood producers who are hardly able to recover cost of production.  Nigerian comedian cum actor, Alibaba has given some advises on what could be done to curb insurgency

Despite all campaigns and threat to stop the world of piracy, they seem to be getting more stands as the day goes by.

Millions of naira has been lost due to the inability to curb piracy. I can remember sometime last year, some actor and movie makers took to the streets of Lagos to walk against piracy and also urged the government to wade into the situation.

Till now, the government happens not to be too keen about the happenings in the entertainment industry which might have been the reason why they are yet to intervene about the issue of piracy.

In a recent post, Nigerian comedian cum actor, Alibaba has given some advises on what could be done to curb insurgency.

He said: “someone asked me why ‘the wedding party’ movie is being sold on the street, this is the same reason most of our government officials loot the treasury because the forfeiture laws are child’s plat. If a pirate is caught, he gets away with a fine of 40k, if I steal 1 billion from government coffers, if I hold on to that for 4 years, and you ask me to refund it, I can give about 2.5 billion naira. The penalty should be deterrent. Not an option, it should hurt like if men who rape minors get castrated and those who rape anyone get death by hanging. So let the pirates pay equivalent of $250,000 and a 5 years jail term. Don’t forget, those people on the street are not the pirates, the pirates are in a hotel, waiting for proceeds. But if you start picking the guys on the street up, change will come.”
