most Nigerians are illiterates and primitive people? how many corners of this country have you set your foot? infact how many people have you met one on one in a simple street of a town? to have you use such conclusive term that MOST Nigerians are primitive. if a german or asian messes up English during a speech,do we have it written all over Yahoo news? yes, the first lady has her setbacks just as everyone else does.how is she any less than the past 'eloquent' first ladies. @ least, she still remembers to do her job of reaching out to the less privileged. so better watch what you say about people at the top, else you remain at the lowground and keep being a spectator

Thanks for this good advice friend. Let us learn to respect elders so that eldership will reach us. If we respect people at the top, we will definitely get to the top tomoro, but if not, we marry the lowest ebb. It is a shameful thing to expose the weakness of the mother of our nation and make her a public spectacle. Shame to that man who exposes his father's nakedness.

Thank you very much Angelistic, English is not our Language. Instead of talking about how to speak good English, we should focus on how to make Nigeria a safe place to live! How to improve our economy and how to stop kidnapping, so that people can come and invest or visit our country without being afraid! Please allow the Woman to express herself, at least we understand what she mean! that is very important.

Which english is correct english? Just as some argued about 'nigeria has' and 'nigeria have' both are correct when used in diff context. American english is not correct english but u cant criticize it cos americans accepted it as correct and they call it 'american english'. Do u know that if we accept our pidgin today as correct we can also call it 'nigerian english'? Do u know that our 'fufu' is now an english wod? So wat is english and which is correct? There is hardly an english wod with english origin.if its nt latin, its frence or greek or even yoruba. Make una drop mata for 'matayas mba'. First lady speak it! Any1 u say naim correct, naim correct!

For the first time in the history of Nigerian presidency,Nigeria's a defective doctorate-degree holder as president who lacks communication skill with human capacity & just like husband, his first lady too is in the same category.
President Jonathan's just at the same IQ-low level, with his wife-Patience Jonathan. To confirm this, refer back to his antecedence, i.e.Jonathan's interview with CNN,very poor and disgraceful by Nigeria president.
Samething or worst much more was his wife,Dame Patience Jonathan, supposed to be an NCE holder in whatever the discipline.Current set of couple claiming the title of first-citizens of Nigeria.Nigerians home & in diaspora are really ashame of Dame Patience & president Goodluck Jonathan. They must both evacuate the presidency and stop disgracing Nigerians.I guess due to Jonathan lacked of understanding good grammar with his defective domestic doctorate Nigerian university-degree,he needs to undergo further refreshment and upgrading, in order for Jonathan not to flout Nigerian constitution anymore. Dr Pat Kolawole Awosan,Canada.

Nobody is above mistakes, so let me correct yours too Mr "I know it all".

1.Jonathan's interview with CNN,very poor and disgraceful by Nigeria president.

2.Nigerians home & in diaspora are really ashame of Dame Patience & president Goodluck Jonathan.

3.I guess due to Jonathan lacked of understanding good grammar

I would rather leave you Dr Pat Kolawole to do the corrections yourself, Pot calling kettle black. Dr my ass...Please disappear from this site....Long Hisssssssssssss

That was a good one, my dear NEVA MIND. Inspite of the fact that the so called Dr kolawole lives in canada, his English is disgraceful.

I wonder tha type of university he attended in Canada. Or do they also produce half baked graduates?

English is not our langauge. We can make mistakes. It is not a big deal.

I am proud of Goodluck Jonathan. He appreciates his wife and he doees not see her inability to speak good English as a problem.
Love conquers all. For this, I give him credit.

Our president is a sound Phd holder. I watched the interview and I dont remember him making mistakes.
He represented us well and we are proud of him.

IT IS NOT TRUE. NOT ALL NIGERIANS FEEL THAT WAY.
I AM TAKING A PHD AT THE KING'S COLLEGE LONDON{THE 3RD OR 4TH BEST SCHOOL FOR LAW IN THE UK}, AND I WILL TELL YOU THIS:

A LOT OF MY CLASSMATES FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF EUROPE CANNOT SPEAK PROPER ENGLISH-- BELIEVE IT OR NOT THERE IS A GERMAN TUTOR WHO COMES TO GIVE US LECTURES FROM OXFORD, AND ... NA WAH!!
ALSO OUR FRENCH AND GREEK TUTURS ARE NOT BETTER THAN MRS JONATHAN.

LOOK, IF NOT BECAUSE OF THE COLONIAL MENTALITY THAT HAS POSSESSED SOME OF US, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT THERE IS NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT A PERSON WHO IS NOT A NATIVE SPEAKER OF THE LANGUAGE, FUMBLING IT EVERY NOW AND THEN.

OBVIOUSLY, THE IDEAL SITUATION WOULD BE FOR ONE WHO WENT TO SCHOOL TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK THE LANGUAGE PROPERLY, BUT DONT FORGET NOT EVERYONE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO GOOD SCHOOLS.

SO PLEASE CONSIDER THAT BEFORE YOU CRITICISE... BESIDES A LOT OF MUMS BACK HOME HAVE THIS SAME ISSUE.

FINALLY I MUST ADD THAT I LIVED IN NIGERIA ALL MY LIFE BEFORE COMING TO ENGLAND IN 2008 FOR MY STUDIES {LLM & PHD}, AND IT STRUCK ME THAT IT IS ONLY IN AFRICA THAT SPEAKING/ OR NOT BEING ABLE TO SPEAK GOOD ENGLISH IS AN ISSUE....IT IS A PITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OTHER COLONISED PARTS OF THE WORLD HAVE GOTTEN OVER THEIR COMPLEX!

I ONCE ASKED AN INDIAN CLASSMATE WHO DID NOT KNOW HOW TO SPEAK PROPER ENGLISH WHAT HAPPENED,AND HE LOOKED AT ME CURIOUSLY AND BOLDLY REPLIED: "ENGLISH WAS NOT MY NATIVE LANGUAGE!YOU AFRICANS, BE PRIDE OF YOUR CULTURE". HE WAS SO DISGUSTED WITH ME, HE WALKED AWAY.

PLEASE NOBODY SHOULD BE ABUSED FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO SPEAK THE LANGUAGE PROPERLY!!!

I beg to differ wit ur analysis especially on Spoken English by other nationals in ur case d German, Indian etc.
I agree that speeking a language other than ur Lingua Franka well or not doesnot measure IQ nor acceptability.
Hv, unlike d other people, English is our Lingua Franka. Even India, after British Colonial rule, abandoned English for Hindi.
A language u had a college education with should be well written and/or spoken by u. QED.
Some very good science students do poorly in English esp.ly Spoken. Many factors could acct our first lady's Spoken English blunders (assuming she writes well), but i think she shd be more circumspect.

I don't agree with that. The first lady mirrors the image of the women of her country outside. Is this the kind of nonsense she'll be taking abroad?

The first lady will be faced sometimes with responsibilities at the highest international level. Is this one equiped for it?

If Africa was leading the world, then we wouldn't have to worry about anything else but ourselves. We're trailing behind the world, this is why we have to play catch-up and raise to the highest international standards set by someone else.

This woman has the intellectual level of the wife of an igwe and she would be perfectly fit for that. She's an embarrassment of the highest level for a country like Nigeria.

HOWEVER, HERE IN THE WEST, THE WESTERNERS ARE NOT LOOKING ARE NOT LOOKING TO CATCH OUT ANY NON NATIVE SPEAKER WHO CANNOT SPEAK ENGLISH WELL!!! FOR THEM A NON NATIVE SPEAKER OF ENGLISH IS A PERSON WHO USES THE LANGUAGE AS LINGUA FRANCA...AND NOTHING MORE!
AND THIS IS TRUE...I CANT IMAGINE MUMMIES OF HER AGE SPEAKING ENGLISH AT HOME WHILE EATING GARRI! CAN YOU...LOL!

UNIVERSITY TUTORS IN BRITAIN WHO ARE NOT BRITISH ARE EMPLOYED IN BRITISH UNIVERSITIES [OXFORD/CAMBRIDGE/KCL/LSE/UCL}...{HELLO}...
AND THEY TEACH IN WHATEVER ENGLISH THEY CAN SPEAK. SOME OF MY TUTORS SOUND A BIT WORSE. THIS IS A STATEMENT OF FACT.
{{WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THE EMPHASIS BEING PLACED ON THE LANGUAGE BY [ONLY] ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE THE WORLD OVER?!}}

IF YOU COME TO BRITAIN TO WORK {A GOOD JOB}OR SCHOOL{A GOOD SCHOOL}, WHEN YOU MIX WITH THESE PEOPLE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT {THE CLASSY ONES AND NOT THE IGNORANT ONES WHO DONT HAVE AN OPINION ON ANYTHING ANYWAY}, YOU WILL FIND THAT THESE IDEAS THW PEOPLE AT HOME BOTHER ABOUT ARE A PRODUCT OF THE UNFORTUNATE COLO MENTALITY SOME HAVE.

INFACT I TELL YOU, THEY'LL EVEN BE GRATEFUL THAT THEY CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE IS SAYING, AND THAT SHE IS NOT TALKING TO THEM IN HER NATIVE TONGUE!

CHINESE /INDIAN/ SPANISH/ FRENCH/ETC/ FIRST LADIES WONT EVEN WASTE THEIR TIME SPEAKING ENGLISH EVEN IF THEY COULD!

I RESPECT YOUR OPINION THOUGH LOLA, BUT LIKE I SAID BEFORE - I MAINTAIN THAT THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WHO TAKE ISSUE WITH WHO CAN - OR - WHO CANNOT SPEAK ENGLISH WELL ARE =='BLACK PEOPLE'==
AND IT MAKES ME SAD.

IT MUST BE SAID THAT OUTSIDE AFRICA ITS ALL ABOUT NATIONAL IDENTITY...AND THIS STARTS WITH THE NATIONAL LANGUGE...IF YOU DONT BELIEVE IT, VISIT THE UN WHEN THEY HAVE THEIR MAIN YEARLY OUTING...OR ANY OTHER INTERNATIONAL OUTING EG. I wonder why africans will always think everybody reason as they do. Let me tell everybody here something, there is a great difference between speaking and communication. In communication the final intellectual import of what you are saying prevails the the language or grammar you use in saying it.

I would refer everybody here to the recent UN assembly where the palestinian PM addressed the whole world in his native language Arabic. The gesture of the communication and the import emotionally overshadowed the language entirely. The whole world gave him a standing ovation with a meritorious applause after the speech. We all sat here abusing the first lady saying she makes mistakes.
One day, my people will wake up and respect who they are.

Although nobody truly is above mistake ,but when it comes to public presentations i suggest she takes time to study whatever has being written down for her or if at all she is the one writting at least she should give someone else to proofread b4 she come on national tv .It is okay to make mistake once or twice, but when it becomes consistent there is no more room for excuses. i advice she fixes things so as not to become an object of public mockery.

I could only read few out of those comments. Its been an argumentative conversation so far. However, the truth must be said. That the person in question made mistakes does not warrant suspending her PA or whoever takes care of her write-up she used to present in public. We can not rule it out that people of her calibre make more mistakes (both gramatical, and ethical) even beyond hers.
Notwithstanding, there should be proper tutorial meeting between hergoodself and any competent English expert to brush her up.
At the the instance of people's comment I even discovered that series of error were made, which were not intentional, but probably oversight. Nigeria is experiencing serious hit recently which has been claiming lives, and causing her a shame before the international community.
Dearly beloved brethren, there are vital issues to attend to which are far above these hilarious grammatical issue. (NOT HILLARIOUS)
Based on the foregoing, I hereby submit that:
1. Prayers should be made to arrest all arresters of peace and harmony of Nigeria
2. Competent English Expert should be appointed to take up the challenge(s), and her salary to be debited accordingly.
3. Let us be our brother's keeper.
4. Let PEACE REIGN

I am not encouraged reading tru those blunders. It shows the level of education we have in Nigeria. If she was a teacher as an NCE holder, she would have passed these blunders to the pupils/students. A university graduate in Nigeria! no it's bad. She should have at least to some extent learn how to construct simple english sentences, knowing she would become the first lady of this great country. Yes, nobody is perfect but for heavens sake not this type of errors. I advise she gets a sound english teacher. Just an advice, that's all.

Fellow Nigerians, permit me to quickly appreciate your contributions, frankly speaking we all have spoken our mind and that's what opinion polls is all about. We critics for good and as well to learn from simple errors that are associated with grammatical functions.I once met a Japanese professor, during a conference, he did a good research and his study was perfect, but he keep on making mistakes during speeches, and he also acknowledge that he did not master the English Language , and we all understood what he said.My reason for this example is that Nigerians are fond of making jest of people in the High places don't forget that " The colonial masters did not do much for us" they only made us lost focus and that has been our problem till date, they took sides even when they wanted to give Independence to Nigeria.Of course we don't have a national language. which is bad Nigeria should have a national language which must be spoken to Nigerians and by Nigerians. The president and his wife are from the ethnic minorities, and i know how bad it was to come from those regions where there was little or no development by the "Ex-military juntas"so that is a big challenge. The issue of mother tongue is also a factors and i wish to say here that we need to have our own NATIONAL LANGUAGE and forget the colonial betrayers.

POSER: HOW MANY OTHER FIRST LADIES OUT OF AFRICA, APART FROM UK AND US CAN SPEAK PROPER ENGLISH?

IT IS ONLY IN AFRICA THAT NOT BEING ABLE TO SPEAK ENGLISH IS A BIG DEAL..... DING - DING - DING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COLONIAL MENTALITY...ANYONE?...

HERE IN THE WEST, THE WESTERNERS ARE NOT LOOKING ARE NOT LOOKING TO CATCH OUT ANY NON NATIVE SPEAKER WHO CANNOT SPEAK ENGLISH WELL!!! FOR THEM A NON NATIVE SPEAKER OF ENGLISH IS A PERSON WHO USES THE LANGUAGE AS LINGUA FRANCA...AND NOTHING MORE!
AND THIS IS TRUE...I CANT IMAGINE MUMMIES OF PATIENCE'S AGE SPEAKING ENGLISH AT HOME WHILE EATING GARRI! CAN YOU...LOL!

UNIVERSITY TUTORS IN BRITAIN WHO ARE NOT BRITISH ARE EMPLOYED IN BRITISH UNIVERSITIES [OXFORD/CAMBRIDGE/KCL/LSE/UCL ETC}...{HELLO}...
AND THEY TEACH IN WHATEVER ENGLISH THEY CAN SPEAK. SOME OF MY TUTORS {PHD KCL} SOUND A BIT WORSE. THIS IS A STATEMENT OF FACT.
{{WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THE EMPHASIS BEING PLACED ON THE LANGUAGE BY [ONLY] ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE THE WORLD OVER?!}}

PITY.

G8 MEETING, AND YOU WILL SEE [NON AFRICAN] LEADERS YOU KNOW CAN SPEAK ENGLISH BANGING AWAY IN THEIR NATIVE TONGUE..

AND HERE WE ARE BEATING THE FIRST LADY UP FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO.....

INFACT I TELL YOU, THEY'LL EVEN BE GRATEFUL THAT THEY CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE IS SAYING, AND THAT SHE IS NOT TALKING TO THEM IN HER NATIVE TONGUE!

INFACT LET ME REVERSE IT AND TURN THAT GUN INWARDS:

THOSE EXPATRIATES THAT HAVE LIVED IN NIGERIA FOR 16YEARS ...YES THOSE ONES WHO MOVE AROUND IN TINTED VEHICLES AND DONT WANT TO MIX WITH NIGERIANS UNLESS YOU ARE A SOUTH SOUTH LADY THEY CAAN MARRY SO THEY WILL STOP PAYING HEAVY FOREIGN TAXES ON THIER BUSINESSES {CAUSE UPON MARRIAGE THEY ARE PUT ON THE WAITING LIST TO BECOME NIGERIAN CITIZENS}....YES THOSE ONES :

HOW MANY OF THEM SPEAK THE LOCAL LANGUAGE OF THE LAGOS OR RIVERS OR WARRI WHERE THEY'VE LIVED FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES A NIGERIAN CHILD TO GO THROUGH THE 6-3-3-4 NIGERIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM ...WHERE THEY LEARN HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH!

PLEASE LET US STOP BEATING UP OURSELVES

No country has ever developed with a foreign language! Nigeria has been accommodating English language for the past 4 decades, and yet no significant progress is made to our socio economic, scientific and technological facets of living. Section 57 of the Nigeria constitution contained the emancipation of three Nigeria's languages,HAUSA,IGBO and YORUBA. It encourages that these languages should serve medium for deliberations in National Assembly. But,upto now,we heard of no implementation of the said section as if its another National Minimum Wage! Similarly,National Policy of Education encourages that Pre Primary and Primary students be taught in the language of their immediate environment, but yet Nigerians consider it a taboo to observe their children speaking native language at home or at school. Just get to register this in your mind,no matter how you are learned in English, you can never attain the highest proficiency in English like the native speaker. You can never meet up the highest level of Competence and Performance in English Language if its not your Mother Tongue (L1). Remember,we are not Chomsky, and even Chomsky commits mistakes. One is not exclusive in committing excusable English LINGUISTIC Crimes(i.e Grammatical Errors) in Nigeria. This is because its not our L1,and despite the fact that Allah has blessed us with more than 600 Nigeria's Languages,we are still not happy with it. Rather,we appreciate to be identified with a language that has been hampering our educational development. Mrs. Dame Patience Jonathan carry on. Do not feel insulted or be discouraged by this. Do the best you can,I care less for Linguistic Crimes in as much as the message is passed across. I believe no English native speaker as well, can speak my dearest Hausa language or Dame's language like me. I've gotta total mastery of my language, just as Dame got hers.

I've gotta total mastery of my language, just as Dame got hers.

my fellow nigerians, why do we battle over things that are meaningless and worthless, english or no english shouldnt be the case here,we should be more concerned about what she has upstairs and what good she can offer, for all i know this woman might be intelligent and cant communicate in english, which does not mean she is a dummy!!!!!!!!!am sure she is better than u all here criticizing her.for me i need a change in nigeria,i dont care in what language she speaks to make a change thats what matters, even the white people living here with me dont speak the perfect english they still go 2 school 2 learn it.some nigerian people are funny they want to become whites by fire by force.speaking english doesnt mean u are wise and intelligent get that!!!!!!!!especially when i watch nollywood movies i see how the actresses force english out of their mouth, its just hilarious, still it doesnt sound good lets not kill or rather bite our tongues for nothing sake

Yes, English is not our native language, but it is our lingua franca. It is normal to make a mistake in English depending on the situation. But considering the calibre of d status (First Lady), and d magnitutde of the G'errors, common it is too bad! If we all agree that English is our national language, then our leaders should portray that national identity by speaking a good English. English Language as a subject is being taught in d primary and secondary level of education, and is the only language of instruction @ the tertiary level. For some1 to have passed through these 3 systems and still speaking that type of english, I think that is not good enough. Just look @ d mistakes, they r not usual mistakes an average person will make even in a casual speech, talkless of a formal speech.... Whatever is worth doing, is worth doing well!

Any way sha, to me I believe the fault is no totally The First Lady's. I feel that when her husband was sweating it out in school to bag his Doctorate he should have given the woman a chance to read up to the Master's level at least. All the N.C.E. holders that we have around, what English can they speak?. The Minister of Education has made it mandatory that all NCE holders should struggle for their First Degree at least. Free our first Lady a beg. English is not her Father tongue. lol.

Removal of Oil Subsidy
MaE
12/22/2011 3:34:27 AM
The Federal Government has good plans for Nigerians by bring the above topic to the testing waters. I want to say the removal of oil subsidy is only appropriate for nations where there is stable power supply for the production sector to boost the economy and the creation of jobs for the youths. The lack of jobs in our economy has made our youths to be completely involved in criminal activities. The problem of power supply has sent almost all industries to move to neighbouring countries. I want to seize this opportunity to beg the Federal Government to please work on improving the power sector and creation employment opportunities for our youths and then embarked on the removal of the oil subsidy in modules for a gradual process.

The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan has tried her best to speak in public. Thank God our First Lady is not like the Chinese people who always speak in public with their mother's tongue (L1) not minding whoever is around to listen to them and learn one lessons or the other. Anyway she should be encouraged to take up some part courses to improve herself. For example, the Open University and some other Distance Learning Centres are there for her to create time out of her tight schedule to improve herself.

let us face the fact here, i wish the first lady ended her education while in secondary school, her grammatical blunders would have been pardonable but in this case, she went for an nce program and later furthered by studying in the university of ph. not only that, she has worked in several sectors such as education, banking, health. so,i expected her to have improved on her grammatical skills. some of you are talking about china, spain, italy, india but do you realise that the citizens of the individual nations aforementioned speak one language and that is their native language. you cannot compare nigeria to such nations because we are not united in the language we speak. there is a saying that goes like this: a f**l at 40 is a f**l forever. well, i do not think this is the time she is to be corrected because she must have been corrected a long time ago but she was adamant to those corrections.

@NONYE, i really do appreciate the fact that you commented on this issue. I wonder why nigerians hold a borrowed language in high esteem, its so pathetic. After reading through your thread and some others before it, i didn't bother reading again and as far as i am concerned, you are an intellectual. No one is perfect, as long as the woman communicates and peepz understand, then all is well. Thank you for your good analysis, you have communicated rather than talking. kudos

Please leave this woman alone. She is a very lucky woman that her husband did not emulate those people who will abandon the wife that suffered with them and marry a fresh blood to be the first lady. If you are a woman, you know what I mean. Instead of jesting, pray for Nigeria. Thank you.

i just wonder! Haven listend to the debate about madam first lady and her public presentation, i wonder what is the bone of contention-but then again i understand that when you are a public figure you are subject to scrutiny and you don't have the privilege for privacy. However i would like to drop my own views and advice.
1- God does not look at physical appearance of man in order to bless him. Suffice it to say that the 1st lady is not sound in the foreign language but God chose to elevate her to that exalted position and no one can take it away except God.
2- secondly, not all people were born with a silver spoon in their mouth or had parents who were ready to slave themselves to a breaking point in order to give them a sound educational background. So, pls consider the fact that the 1st lady might have been in this situation.
3- some people that received the best of education in their childhood may speak the queens english so eloquently but that's all they are worth. Try them other ways and you will see that they are the worst dummies on the face of the earth.
4- has it ever occured to you that the person charged with the responsibility of preparing her speeches may have being making those blunders without her being able to detect as a result of her poor educational background?
Do not judge so you are not judged.

I want to say a big thank you to Almithy God for President Jonathan who after knowing the grammatical defficiency of his wife was not ashamed to still choose her as his first lady. Many like some of us white-washed walls and painted sepulchars would have prefered choosing concubines thereby leaving the woman that suffered with us to be where we are presently. Tell me you disjointed and empty encyclopedia of knowledge, how many of us will be that bold to bring our parents to public ridicule as we are doing to this innocent woman. If we cannot do that to our parents, then it is a great sin to do it to the mother of our nation. For us to get to the top, we must respect and honour those at the top.

He that lives in a glass house they say, must not walk naked in his hallway. We are all affected by granpa laziness with children and grand children of underdevelopment that permeates our system: societal and human. So, when they say someone is a product of his or her society, I say he or she is the product of the ability he/she is disposed to exert. Some of Soyinka's mates in his school days may speak worse grammar than Damned Patience Jonathan.

1. My Husband and Sambo is a good people (one person + one person = people) abi na lai?

2. The President was once a Child and the Senators were once a Children (how many Senators do we have? na only one senator(S)?

3. My Fellow Widows (she is empathizing with other widows - "I and my widows are one", e fit dey inside her own bible sha)

4. A Good Mother takes care of his Children (unity in diversity woman taking care of the children in place of the man)

5. The people sitting before you here were once a Children (yes, was there any one born an adult before?)

6. Yes we are all happy for the effort,it is not easy to carry second in an international competition like this one - Addressing Press men after Female Under 19 Fifa World Cup (It is self-explanatory)

7. The Bombers who born them?wasn't it not a woman? They were once a Children now a adult now they are bombing women and children making some children a widow (na pijin she wan spik) "Shey na woman born all those bombers? Now those children don become widow when them never marry.

8. My Heart feels sorry for these Children who have become Widows by losing their Parents for one reason or another (another word for sympathy na wetin "sorry")

9. We should have love for our fellow Nigerians irrespective of their NATIONALITY? Abi, we have Nigeria-American, we also have Nigerian Idians too. She is correct.

Well, I do not see anything wrong with the grammatical errors of the first lady. What we need in this country are men and women that will take Nigeria to the promised land. So far, the first lady has demonstrated some reasonable level of passion for the less privileged in our society. I am convinced that with time, she will certainly vacate her position more better than she met it. All we need do as true Nigerians is to pray for our dear country and avoid anything that will divert our attention.

Well, who says anyway that other countries of the world do not expose the assaults on lexis & structure committed by their elites in speech making? I could remember an article I read abt George W. Bush (assessing the era of his political rule). where he was described as "one who blows gaffes (grammatical blunders) at the whim of a hat" & "one who commits un-provoked assaults on lexis an structure". He was said by the article to have sat at the oval office, throwing bombs from every corner of the mouth. Can you imagine Bush saying: "are the world's children listening"? Even Africans who don't have English as their mother tongue know emphatically that that statement by all indications is wrong (grammatically). I think we all should stop making a mountain outta a mole hill. Exposing their (the leaders') mistakes (and of course hoping that they get too see it) is just a way of reminding them of man's imperfections and to help them reach perfection. I rest my case

But one thing is that shun the permanent secretary to Bayelsa State because if u take it is greed and we may not believe any transformation agenda of Mr President, as this seems suppressive to the poor massive. be contented with what God has given to you people now. live Permanent Secretary to improve another person and family, society etc. Thanks.

Abeg if you want to make corrections, you need to know what you are talking about. Which one be this argument about 'nigeria has' and 'nigeria have'? How can somebody say that both are correct when used in different contexts? Can you say- Silifa have an intelligent son or Idiagbon have an argumentative wife ? Haba, I know say grammar no be our language (according to Sir Shina Peters) but make we softly, softly dey massacre am. lol

We have seen other notable people in the world who refused to speak English language they prefer to speak their own. Dame Patience Jonathan should be told to speak her own language, after all there should be no crime in that.

Bitter truth
Steph
2/26/2014 5:57:06 PM
Let us stop making excuses for our first lady...the bitter truth is that her English is terrible and so long as here in Nigeria the official language is English, courtesy demands she betters her lot so long as the use of English language is concerned.Stop all these name callings at each other and heading for each others juglar. The certificates she flaunts, cause I see she has a couple of them, are written in English language am sure, which is a clear indication that she didn't just write and pass her exams in English language but that her instructions were in English language so much is expected of her in the use of the language. Please, stop citing examples of other first ladies who are not good in English as an excuse for her poor English.Nigeria,is the giant of Africa or are we renouncing that position. Therefore, the other countries should look up to us and not us settling with them where they are...below us.I say this because a couple of people are making excuses for her in the line of the question of "how many African first ladies are good at the use of English language?"If you ask me,I would say it is an unfounded excuse.Patience's poor use of English language is a situation that ought to be addressed...either she submits herself to the tutelage of some private English tutor or she stops futher public speeches. It is embarassing to say the least.Stop all these unnecessary "defending her".Let her hear the bitter truth.Yes,like in every other thing in life,no one is perfect in the use of English but we constantly aim for perfection in all our endevours in life therefore, near perfection is expected of her as the first lady of a country like ours...GIANT OF AFRICA.Haba.

The woman is always disgracing us, and there is everything wrong with that. There is no justification for her frequent embarrassment. Enough is enough. Meanwhile let me tell u ignorant guys, there is no office called the office of the first lady in the nigerian constitution. So she is not our mother by any standard. Take it or leave it, your parents will disown you if after paying your fees in school, you came home to speak this woman's kind of english.

f**ls will continue being f**ls and s****d Nigerians will not stop mocking their first lady on social networks. The saying that no one is above perfection can never be over emphasised... The fact is that none is even equal to perfection so you guys should stop wasting your time here because the first lady doesn't even give a damn... Rise up youths lets think of better ways to stop Boko haram and make Nigeria our dream country. I rest my case

I dnt see anytin wrong in her spoken words as English language is not her native dialect, wat is most important is dat a clear communication has been made by her 4 her listeners to understand aftall an English man can not speak okrika or igbo language which am very sure dat her excellency is very fluent on. So pls i dnt like dis idea of ridicule to her person. I lov her just d way she is. Thnx
