Half Of A Yellow Sun in Nigeria
Story by Carinya Sharples
Click for Full Image Size Shooting on the film adaptation of Half of A Yellow Sun, the acclaimed novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has now wrapped up in Nigeria.

The eagerly awaited production, which stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton and AMAA-winner Genevieve Nnaji, was filmed in Calabar, Nigeria. Adichie´s bestselling story is set during the Nigerian-Biafran war during the 1960s.

Filming ended on 23 June, just a few days before the start of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation Commission for Africa conference in Calabar, at which author Adichie was a special guest.

British-Zimbabwean actress Newton, star of films including Mission Impossible II and Crash, will take on the role of Olanna, with Dream Girls´Anika Noni Rose as her sister Kainene. British-Nigerian Golden Globe nominee Ejiofor plays the role of revolutionary professor Odenigbo, with John Boyega (who appeared in last year´s Attack The Block) as his houseboy Ugwu. Game Of Thrones´s Joseph Mawle joins the cast as English writer Richard.

Cobhams Asuquo and singer-songwriter Keziah Jones are also said to be involved in the production, producing original music for the soundtrack.

The film, adapted for screen by Nigerian theatre director, playwright and novelist Biyi Bandele, is set to come to the big screen in 2013.

It's funny how everyone keeps going on about Genny got a role on half of a yellow sun. If you have read the book then you know the part she got is extremely insignificant and they could have given her or another nigerian actress a stronger role where they will be featured more than once or twice in brief scenes lol. Hopefully they really do justice to the book the way it has been written and dont start making changes to it. Thandi Newton is really annoying as an actress and there is nothing more irritating than having a non african trying to imitate an african accent so I hope she does the role justice.

Should be a good movie

I loved the book. I am still upset that a half white woman was chosen as the lead character. That's european film making though. white wash us all. Anyway, I can't wait to see the movie.

Genny's role in half of a yellow may not be a lead but she lasted from the beginning to the end of the novel. So thumbs up i knew genny was goin to be the best in nollywood and africa at large.

who knows who is taking the roles of Olanna, Ugwu, etc.whosoever is Olanna must be able to speak Igbo in that same voice that melted Ugwu.To be honest I've never been to the cinema.way too expensive for me but nothing will stop me from seeing 'Half of a Yellow Sun'
