Tomato which is one of the edible fruit that is typically eaten as a vegetable or salad in Nigeria records about 75% wastage annually.

As a result, the Federal Government has promised to put an end to such wastage by establishing new policies that would boost local production and processing in Nigeria.

Speaking with the Minister of State for Trade, Hajiya A’isha Abubakar said that the intended new policies will help to enhance farm produce storage adding that the ministry is making plans and policies that will invigorate local processing of tomato and other perishable products.

She went for an inspection at Erisco Company which according to Erisco Chairman, Chief Eric Umeofia has an installed tomato capacity of 450,000 metric tonnes per annum.

She restated the present administration’s commitment to ensure the promotion and manufacturing of local content which is in line with the agenda of the present administration.
